In this lesson we will learn to greet and farewell others in Chinese.
You will need to prepare the following before you start: greetings poster/slides, target phrases printouts in strips, hanzi grids in strips
INTRODUCTION:
Whole class discussion - How do we greet in English, when we see each other in the morning? How do we farewell each other at the end of the day?
Display the poster/slides and explain the Chinese equivalent for Hello, How are you, I am good, and Goodbye
SPEAKING/LISTENING:
Whole class practice pronouncing the greetings by repeating after the teacher, then say it to 2-3 different partners, phrase by phrase.
Children stand up and walk around to greet and farewell 3 different people in the class.
READING:
In pairs, teachers hand out the phrase printout strip for children to cut into phrases, then they have to hold up the phrase the teacher is saying, eg. 'Show me "Ni Hao"', 'Show me the response to 'Ni Hao Ma'' etc.
WRITING:
The teacher demonstrates the correct stroke order of target phrases on the whiteboard, whole class practises writing in the air/ on the carpet/ on their palm etc.
Each child gets a hanzi grid strip for 'Ni Hao Ma' and practises writing at their own desk. The 'Zai Jian' hanzi grid can be provided for extension.
CONCLUSION
In pairs, practise speaking Chinese to greet and farewell again.
